“Luigi Antonelli” National Literary Prize
(castilenti)
It is an important cultural and national initiative, now at its seventeenth editions. The name is after the famous citizen, as this event has been created to keep his memory alive. It is articulated into three sections such as fiction, novel and theatre. The prize is given to unpublished productions after a hard selection made by specialized jury and one made up of 60 readers chosen among citizens. The prize for the best work is given after the intervention of a local and regional jury together with well-know figures of the field.

Beer Festival
(castilenti)
One of the most important festivals which takes place during the summer season in the last week of August is surely the Beer Festival. It is inevitably linked with German traditions, as Castilenti is twinned with the little village of Bad Groenbach, Bavaria. The copious quantity of beer consumed during the festival is served with local dishes such as cheese, wurstel and “arrosticini”, Abruzzo’s most famous specialty. Music is moreover an important element of the festival, and it is played by the local band.

Pork festival - “S magn lu purcèll”
(castilenti)
The festival is set up by the local tourist office. The first edition was in 2003. The goal of the festival is to let people spend a happy evening among the streets of astilenti old town, visiting exhibitions, bringing the memory back to ancient everyday life to its arts and its crafts. During all night, you can taste regional pork specialties in every gastronomic stalls situated along the streets. Music is, in this case too, an important feature of the festival, and it is played by the local band.

The Holy week
(castilenti)
In ancient times, the holy week was rich of not properly liturgical celebrations. It started on the holy Wednesday with the commemoration of Christ flagellation, when young people heavily hit the altar with a branch.

Striking was also the procession which took place on holy Friday when the symbols of the passion and the crucifixion were brought between to crowd. There were also the Virgins dressed in white and with their faces covered; crying women and the “maries” who sang to commemorate the holy Mary’s pain and the meeting of Christ with the pious women.

Christ’s coffin is a preciousness work of art. It is made up of 5 rare wooden angels and it is covered with a black velvet tissue hand embroidered with gold. It was carried by 6 men while a chorus of only men sang a typical song of the area.

SFILATA DELLE FRACCHIE

(castilenti)
Sfilata delle fracchie is a typical Castilenti event. Young people march spontaneously within the village with a bunch of canes lit in their smaller edge. The meaning of this event is important for them as it is the symbol of their emerging on the society or the exit from a status they didn’t love. The procession is announced by a band. The one who manages to consume the most his cane is the winner. They were oiled with animal fat o beeswax so that they could flame better. The ash or the cane residue was collect in a heap on which boys danced barefoot or with a few garments to show their skill.
